What’s Meshtastic?

Meshtastic is the trademark for an open-source communication software that uses a radio technology called LoRa to facilitate long-distance communications using low-cost hardware. It’s primary feature that sets it apart is why it has “mesh” in the name. Every radio in the system (unless configured not to) will act as a repeater to all the other traffic around it. As such, communications can “hop” from node to node until their destination is reached. This is unlike cell phones in that all communication happens between the nodes, no internet required.

While LoRa has already existed before Meshtastic, and radio isn’t anything new, what Meshtastic brings to the table is a platform for communication that is available to the general public without monthly fees – all supported by a community that is passionate about the technology.

WPAMesh is part of that community, but you shouldn’t take our word for it. Take a look at the Github and note our over 3000 followers, and over 300 contributors just to the device firmware. It is a technology that is worldwide and supports hobbyists and professionals. But it is supported by passionate people everywhere.
